Why Your Facebook and Instagram Ads Aren't Working — And How to Fix Them

Your Meta ads aren't broken — your campaign objective might be wrong, your creative is probably fatigued, or your landing page is losing half your conversions before anyone reads it. Here's what to fix first.

The Problem Is Rarely the Platform

When Meta ads underperform, the reflex is to blame the algorithm. In most cases the ads aren't broken — the targeting is wrong, the creative is tired, or the landing page is killing conversions the ad was about to deliver. Here are the five most common reasons Meta campaigns fail, and what to fix first.

1. Wrong Campaign Objective

This single mistake accounts for more wasted spend than almost anything else. Meta's algorithm optimizes for exactly what you tell it to optimize for. Run a Traffic campaign and you'll get clicks — from people who click everything. Run a Reach campaign and you'll get impressions — from people who scroll past everything. If you want purchases, you need a Conversions campaign with the Purchase event firing correctly on your thank-you page.

We regularly audit accounts where businesses have been running Awareness campaigns for months and wondering why they have no sales. The disconnect is in the objective, not the platform.

2. Creative Fatigue Nobody Noticed

An ad that performs well in week one will lose 60–70% of its effectiveness by week three — even if nothing else changes. Meta shows your ad repeatedly to the same people. Once they've seen it three or four times, they stop registering it.

If you're running the same creative for more than three weeks without refreshing it, your CPM is rising and your results are decaying right now. Check your frequency metric. Anything above 3.5 on a cold audience means it's time for new creative.

3. Targeting That's Too Narrow

Meta's algorithm has improved to the point where very narrow interest targeting often underperforms broad targeting. If your audience is under 100,000 people, you're constraining the algorithm too tightly. The sweet spot for most businesses in Egypt and Saudi Arabia is 500,000 to 3 million, with one or two behavioral qualifiers. Let the algorithm find the buyers within that pool.

4. The Landing Page Is Breaking the Conversion

Your ad can be perfect and still fail if it sends people to a slow page or a page that doesn't match what the ad promised. Every Meta campaign needs a dedicated landing page that continues the ad's message — same offer, same visual language, one clear CTA.

Page speed matters more than most advertisers realize. A page that takes 4 seconds to load on mobile in Egypt loses roughly half its potential conversions before anyone reads a word. Run your landing page through Google PageSpeed Insights. Anything below 70 on mobile is costing you money every day you leave it unfixed.

5. No Systematic Testing

Running one ad and deciding Meta doesn't work is like eating at one restaurant and declaring a city has bad food. Test multiple creative formats, multiple hooks, multiple CTAs. Meta's A/B testing tool is reliable. Run tests for at least 7 days and give each variant a minimum spend of 50 conversions before drawing conclusions.

Where to Start

Check your campaign objective first. Then check how old your creative is. Then check your landing page speed on mobile. These three things fix the majority of underperforming Meta campaigns. If you want an experienced team to audit and run your campaigns, contact us here.
