Social Media Was Always a Discovery Channel. Now It's the Checkout Too.
For years the social media funnel looked like this: user sees post → gets interested → visits website → maybe buys. Every step in that chain is a drop-off point. Instagram Shopping, TikTok Shop, and WhatsApp Business have compressed those steps significantly. Discovery and purchase can now happen inside the same app, without the friction of a browser redirect.
The GCC social commerce market is projected to reach $3 billion by 2027. Most brands in Egypt and Saudi Arabia are still treating their social channels as awareness tools rather than revenue channels. That gap is the opportunity.
Instagram Shopping: What Most Brands Skip
Instagram Shopping lets you tag products directly in posts, Stories, and Reels. When a user taps a tag, they see the product name, price, and description without leaving the app. One more tap takes them to checkout.
Setting it up requires a Facebook Commerce Manager account linked to your Instagram, a product catalogue, and Meta approval (1–3 business days for most MENA accounts). The technical setup takes a few hours. What actually takes work is building the habit of tagging products in every piece of content — which most brands don't do consistently.
The formats that drive the most purchases through Instagram Shopping: Reels showing a product in real use (not the product on a white background), Stories with a shopping sticker and a scarcity element, and carousel posts showing multiple products in a lifestyle setting.
WhatsApp Business as a Revenue Channel
WhatsApp is the most-used messaging app in Egypt and Saudi Arabia by a significant margin. WhatsApp Business turns it into a sales tool: product catalogues, quick replies, automated responses for common questions, and direct payment links.
The brands using it effectively in MENA do three things: they put the WhatsApp number everywhere (bio, website, Google Business profile), they respond within minutes not hours, and they have a product catalogue that makes it easy to browse and ask about a specific item.
A WhatsApp broadcast list of 500 engaged customers drives more immediate sales per message than almost any other channel at the same cost. The only constraint is building the list — you can only add contacts who have saved your number and opted in.
Content That Sells Without Feeling Like an Ad
The content that drives social commerce purchases is not a product photo against a white background. It is: someone using the product in a real, recognizable situation. A question answered with a video showing the actual result. A real customer repost with the product tagged. A limited-time offer with a real deadline.
The difference between a post that gets saves and one that drives purchases is usually the presence of a clear, frictionless next step. Tag the product. Add a "Shop now" sticker. Put the WhatsApp link in the caption. Don't make an interested buyer work to find out how to buy from you.
The Metrics to Watch
Standard engagement metrics — likes, reach, follower count — don't tell you what matters for social commerce. Track: product page visits from social, add-to-cart events from tagged posts, WhatsApp conversations started from your profile, and direct messages asking about pricing or availability. These are purchase-intent signals. If you're not measuring them, you can't improve them.
Start With One Channel
Don't try to set up Instagram Shopping, TikTok Shop, and WhatsApp Business at the same time. Pick the channel where your audience is most active, set it up properly, build the content habit, and add the next channel once the first is generating consistent sales.
